Prayers for safety in the night and the day.

Christian prayers for protection are older than Christianity. The Psalms are full of them, written by a people who walked through actual physical danger. The early Church added prayers for protection from spiritual danger, the temptations and oppositions that the New Testament names plainly. The prayers gathered here include the ancient Aaronic Blessing from the book of Numbers, the famous Lorica of St. Patrick (also called St. Patrick's Breastplate), the Anglican evening prayers asking for defense against the perils of the night, and the prayer to St. Michael the Archangel used across Catholic tradition. They are not amulets. They are requests for the kind of safety that the tradition has always asked God for first.
