Catholic novenas

A novena is a prayer said on nine consecutive days. The form takes its name from the Latin novem, nine, and its pattern from the nine days the apostles and Mary spent in prayer between the Ascension and Pentecost, recorded in Acts 1:14. Novenas are a distinctively Catholic devotional form, though the underlying practice of sustained prayer over a set number of days is much older and is found across the Christian traditions.
