Prayers for peace of mind

Prayers for the settled, quiet mind that the world does not give.

The Christian tradition has a specific word for the inner state these prayers ask for: peace. Not the absence of conflict, but the active settled trust that comes when the soul is at rest in God. The prayers gathered here are the tradition's main prayers for that peace. They include the Anglican Collect for Peace from Morning Prayer, the Orthodox Jesus Prayer that contemplatives have used for hesychast stillness for fifteen hundred years, the Anima Christi prayed after Communion, and the Prayer of St. Francis. They are unanimous that peace of mind is given, not generated, and that the practice of prayer is one of the main ways it is asked for.
