O Lord, our heavenly Father,
Almighty and everlasting God,
who hast safely brought us to the beginning of this day:
Defend us in the same with thy mighty power;
and grant that this day we fall into no sin,
neither run into any kind of danger;
but that all our doings, being ordered by thy governance,
may be righteous in thy sight;
through Jesus Christ our Lord.
Amen.
The Collect for Grace
Also known as O Lord, Our Heavenly Father ยท Morning Prayer Collect for Grace
About this prayer
The Collect for Grace is the third of the three collects appointed for Morning Prayer in the Book of Common Prayer. It is said after the Collect for Peace and concludes the fixed portion of the Morning Prayer service before the prayers of intercession. The collect asks God, who has safely brought the worshippers to the beginning of the day, to defend them through it: keeping them from falling into sin and from running into any kind of danger, guiding their thoughts, words, and works, and directing them toward their eternal salvation. The collect is a summary of what Morning Prayer asks for on behalf of the congregation: a day lived under divine protection and directed toward God.
When it's said
The Collect for Grace is said at Morning Prayer in the Book of Common Prayer, as the third and final collect of the fixed Morning Prayer service. It is also used as a private morning prayer, asking for God's protection and direction through the coming day.
Notes on the text
The phrase 'neither run into any kind of danger' is characteristically comprehensive, covering both spiritual danger (sin) and physical danger (harm). The collect asks not merely that the worshipper be preserved but that all their doings be 'ordered by thy governance,' meaning directed and shaped by God's will rather than their own.
