About this prayer

The Litany of the Blessed Virgin Mary, also called the Litany of Loreto after the shrine in Italy where it was first recorded in its current form, is a Catholic litany of Marian titles. Litanies in Mary's honor existed from at least the 12th century AD; the Loreto form was approved by Pope Sixtus V in 1587 AD and has been the standard Marian litany since. The litany addresses Mary under a series of biblical, theological, and devotional titles, each followed by the petition 'pray for us.' The titles range from scriptural (Mirror of Justice, Seat of Wisdom, House of Gold) to traditional (Queen of Angels, Queen of Peace). Some titles have been added by popes over the centuries; the current form includes titles added as recently as the 20th century.

When it's said

The Litany of Loreto is said during the month of May, which is dedicated to Mary in the Catholic Church, and during October, the month of the Rosary. It is used in Marian devotions, processions, and parish prayer groups. It is also said at shrines dedicated to Mary, including Loreto, Lourdes, and Fatima.

Notes on the text

Many of the titles draw on Old Testament imagery applied to Mary in the Catholic interpretive tradition: the Ark of the Covenant, the Tower of David, the House of Gold, the Morning Star. The title 'Queen conceived without original sin' reflects the doctrine of the Immaculate Conception, defined in 1854 AD. 'Queen assumed into heaven' reflects the Assumption, defined in 1950 AD. Both are Catholic doctrines; they are described here without theological endorsement or criticism.
